PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Junior midfielder Amy Lewis (Hainesport, N.J.) scored twice as the Rutgers University field hockey team won its second straight with a 2-0 victory over Brown University on Sunday afternoon at RU Stadium Complex.
"This team has shown a lot of character and maturity this weekend to come back and grab two wins," said head coach Liz Tchou. "The attitude and energy are there and we just need to work on the little details to put it all together."
Senior Cat Badolato (Berlin, N.J.) drove a hard shot towards the cage as Bears midfielder Whitney Knowlton posted a defensive save to keep the game scoreless. The rebound shot bounced, up for grabs and was directed from Corinne Bach to Lewis. Lewis dribbled and blasted a shot towards the cage. The ball went off Brown defender Katie Young's left foot and into the cage for the RU score in the 13th minute.
"It was pretty lucky. On the insert when the ball came off of Corinne's stick on her touch into me, there was a really weird spin on the ball. That is why I decided to dribble instead of taking the shot right off the bat," Lewis said after the game. "I was trying to put it back on cage for somebody to tip in and it just happened to go off of one of their defenders."
Rutgers controlled the second half offensively, firing 14 of its 22 shots in the final stanza. The Scarlet Knights peppered Brown goalkeeper Lauren Kessler with 12 shots before hitting the target with the 13th of the half.
Off a text-book penalty corner, Melissa Bowman sent ball to setter Bach who pushed to the left for Lewis. The junior raised her season goal total to 14 and continuing the pace both the BIG EAST in goals and points (31).
The Scarlet Knights moved to 7-5 on the season, the most wins in two seasons.
It's the most wins we have had since I have been here and it's a great feeling," Bach noted. "Last weekend was really tough for us, going 0-2. We were very offensively orientated today. We had ton of shots on goal and it was a positive we gave each other so many opportunities to be there in the cage."
Rutgers travels next weekend to Kentucky for a pair of contests. The Scarlet Knights face BIG EAST foe Louisville on Friday, Oct. 5 at 3:00 p.m. RU takes on Virginia at Louisville at 2:00 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 6.
