PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers University Athletic Director Robert E. Mulcahy III announced the hiring of Jeff "CJ" Werneke as the new head volleyball coach today. Werneke, who spent three years at Rutgers as an assistant coach from 1999-2001, returns to the Banks after six-years as head coach at Fairfield University.
"I am thrilled to have CJ returning to Rutgers to join our staff," said Mulcahy. "He is a proven winner who has shown his ability to motivate kids both on and off the court. I look forward to CJ leading all areas of our program to great heights in the years to come."
While at Fairfield, Werneke led the Stags to a combined 111-85 record from 2002-2007, and was named the 2006 and 2007 Anaconda Sports Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. This past season the Stags finished 21-13 overall and 17-1 in the MAAC, and Werneke became Fairfield's all-time winningest coach.
While at Rutgers, Werneke served as the recruiting coordinator for the program. In addition, he handled all scouting, game-day, and travel operations for the Scarlet Knights. Werneke has also coached at East Tennessee State Univeristy, Samford University and the University of Montevallo.
"I'm so grateful for the opportunity to return to Rutgers," said Werneke. "This is such a great opportunity to get back into the highly competitive BIG EAST Conference. I've had so many great memories as a Scarlet Knight and I am happy to be back 'on the Banks'."
