No. 20 Rutgers Falls to No. 6 Connecticut, 4-2

STORRS, Conn. – Rutgers dropped a 4-2 decision to Connecticut in BIG EAST field hockey action on Saturday afternoon at the George J. Sherman Sports Complex. Sophomore Melissa Gonzalez had three goals for the Huskies.
The Scarlet Knights (12-5, 1-4) had a couple of opportunities early in the contest. Junior Jessika Hoh (Allentown, Pa.) and senior Amy Lewis (Hainesport, N.J.) each had a shot, both stopped by Huskies goalkeeper Andrea Mainiero.
UConn (14-2, 3-1) got on the board nearly 16 minutes into the game on a shot from the top of the circle. Senior Lauren Aird, who was standing by the left post, tipped the shot past Rutgers goalkeeper Lauren Decerbo (Tabernacle, N.J.).
RU tied the contest at 1-1 less than four minutes later. Junior Melissa Bowman (Ronks, Pa.) after sending the ball in for the penalty corner, found the back of the cage with a rebound shot.
With the game knotted at the half, the next score came 1:06 into the second half. Gonzalez tallied her first goal of the game, a rebound shot tipped past DeCerbo.
The Scarlet Knights again tied the game in the 40th minute when Lewis drilled a shot from outside the circle which was deflected by senior forward Karen Brewster (Chico, Calif.) for her fourth goal of the season.
Gonzalez put the Huskies on top for good when she converted a feed off a penalty corner three minutes later. Gonzalez was standing at the right side of the net when she received the pass, tapping the ball into the cage.
Gonzalez closed out the scoring for the game in the 49th minute, when she tipped in a pass, again off a penalty corner.
UConn had 12 shots in the game to Rutgers' 11. The Huskies had seven penalty corners, six in the second half, while the Scarlet Knights registered six corners.
Rutgers takes on Bryant on Sunday, Oct. 27 in Providence, R.I. The game is set for a 12:00 p.m. start.
