Oct 26 | Field Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rutgers got scores from six different players en route its fourth shutout of the season, a 6-0 victory over Bryant College in collegiate field hockey action on Sunday afternoon.
The Scarlet Knights (13-5) had 35 total shots, including 19 in the first half. In addition, RU recorded an over-whelming 15-2 advantage in penalty corners. The six goals matched the most scored on the season for the Knights, who also tallied six goals in a 6-0 win at West Chester on August 31.
RU now has 13 wins on the season, the most for the program since 1998 (13-7 final record).
Rutgers jumped on the Bulldogs early, scoring three times in the first seven minutes of the game. Junior forward Jessika Hoh (Allentown, Pa.) commenced the barrage of goals less than three and a half minutes into the contest, off a pass from senior Amy Lewis (Hainesport, N.J.). Hoh, perched on the right side of the cage, found the back of the cage for what proved to be the game-winner.
The scoring continued when two minutes later sophomore Jenna Bull (Oakville, Ontario) deflected a shot from classmate Jill Beck (Spring City, Pa.). The goal was Beck’s first tally of the season. Seventy-six seconds later, junior Sarah Dunn (Eaton, N.Y.) got in on the offensive output, breaking through for her second goal of the fall and pushing Rutgers ahead, 3-0.
The Scarlet Knights added their fourth goal of the game and the first half in the 22nd minute of play. Lewis tallied her 24th score of the year, rebounding her own shot into the cage.
Freshman Heather Garces (Cream Ridge, N.J.) grabbed her first score of the 2008 campaign, a rebound shot just over 10 minutes into the second half. The final tally of the game came in the 67th minute from senior Karen Brewster (Chico, Calif), her fifth score of the year and second in as many games.
As a team, Rutgers has tallied 51 goals currently on the season. The program record is 56 set in 1994.
The Scarlet Knights are back in action on Saturday, Nov. 1, hosting Syracuse at 1:00 p.m.
