Seton Hall Sweeps Rutgers 3-0

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Rutgers volleyball team was unable to overcome a balanced Seton Hall attack as the Scarlet Knights fell 3-0 (25-9, 25-22, 25-9) in BIG EAST volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Walsh Gymnasium.

Rutgers drops to 1-11 overall and 0-3 in BIG EAST play, while Seton Hall improves to 9-8 and 2-1 in league play.

Sophomore's Lauren Voss (Hartland, Wis.) and Caitlin Saxton (Encinitas, Calif.) each posted six kills on 27 attempts to lead RU. Saxton only had two errors for a .148 hitting percentage. Junior Kyra Thompson (Tucson, Ariz.) led all Scarlet Knights with 12 digs.

After dropping the first set 25-9, Rutgers came out hot in the second. The Scarlet Knights would race out to a 6-1 advantage before a 7-2 Pirates run would tie the set (8-8). After the teams traded four consecutive points, Seton Hall gained control of the set by winning 11 of the next 18 points to grab a 21-17 lead.

The young Scarlet Knights squad did not go away though, winning the next four points to level the set (21-21). The Pirates would halt the RU run though, winning four of the final five points, including two aces from Allie Matters to capture the set 25-22. Seton Hall would use the momentum gained in the come-from-behind second set win and cruise in the match-clinching third set, 25-9.

Meghan Matusiak led three Pirates who reached double-figures in kills with 11. Teammates Krissy Wrobel and Sarah Osmun chipped in 10 kills apiece for Seton Hall.

Rutgers will next be in action Sunday for a second BIG EAST road contest in as many days. The Scarlet Knights will travel to Villanova, Pa. to take on the Wildcats at 2 p.m.
