PISCATAWAY, N.J. - After scoring consecutive game-winning goals in 1-0 wins over Pittsburgh (Oct. 3) and No. 9 West Virginia (Oct. 5), Rutgers junior forward Caycie Gusman (Honolulu, Hawaii) has been named to the SoccerBuzz Elite Team of the Week, the magazine announced Thursday. The award is the second for a Scarlet Knight this season, as sophomore Ashley Jones (Feasterville, Pa.) earned the same honor on Sept. 16.
Gusman received numerous accolades after her impressive weekend, earning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, ECAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week and Soccer America Team of the Week honors. She leads Rutgers with seven goals, including four game-winners. The junior is tied for fourth-place in the BIG EAST in scores.
A 2-0 weekend, highlighted by the victory over the No. 9 Mountaineers, put the Rutgers women's soccer team No. 10 in the latest RPI. Rutgers (9-3, 4-1) is the second-highest ranked BIG EAST squad, behind No. 5 Notre Dame. The top ranked team in the RPI is Portland, who defeated Rutgers 1-0 on Sept. 26.
RU is also ranked in multiple national polls, including Soccer America (No. 14), National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas (No. 21), SoccerBuzz (No. 23), Soccer Times (T-No. 23) and Top Drawer Soccer (No. 28). Rutgers is tied at No. 2 in the NSCAA/adidas mid-atlantic region poll.
The Scarlet Knights return action to face BIG EAST foe Louisville on Friday, Oct. 10, for New Jersey Youth Soccer Night. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. Admission is free for all youth and high school soccer players as part of NJYSN. For more information contact Jeremy Davis at jdavis@scarletknights.com.
