NEW YORK, N.Y. – Rutgers field hockey closed out its 2008 season with a 1-0 win at Columbia on Sunday afternoon.
The Scarlet Knights improved their record to 14-6, the most wins for the program since 1997 (14-7) and just one win off the program-best of 15 wins (1984). In addition, the six losses were the fewest for an RU team since 1986 (14-6-2).
The game was a hard-fought battle because both teams were coming off of losses the day before to conference teams,” said head coach Liz Tchou. “Jenna Bull had an outstanding game and our defense was able to hold off a feisty Columbia attack. It was a great team effort
The contest was a defensive struggle in the first half as the teams combined for just three shots and four penalty corners in the first 35 minutes of play.
RU scored the game’s only goal in the 48th minute of play. Sophomore Jenna Bull (Oakville, Ontario) broke the scoreless tie after finishing a give-and-go from teammate Amy Lewis (Hainesport, N.J.). The play was set up by a penalty corner insert from junior Melissa Bowman (Ronks, Pa.).
The Knights’ defense blocked two consecutive shots by the Lions off penalty corners and freshmen goalkeeper Lyndsey Caliendo (Jackson, N.J.) posted four saves in the win.
