Sandra Abel Named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers women's lacrosse junior goalkeeper Sandra Abel (Monrovia, Md.) was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for her work in the team's losses to Delaware (Feb. 28) and Cornell (March 2). In those two games, Abel totaled 24 saves while allowing 17 goals.
In RU's 7-6 setback at Delaware, Abel played all 60 minutes and faced 27 shots, recording 11 saves, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. In the team's 10-6 defeat at the hands of Cornell, Abel faced 33 shots, tallying 13 saves along with one ground ball in 60 minutes on the field. In three games this season, Abel, who was named to the 2008 All-BIG EAST Preseason team, has played 168 of a possible 180 minutes. She has recorded 30 saves while facing 92 shots and holds a goals-against average of 46.2 percent. The junior has accumulated five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
The Scarlet Knights (0-3) return to action on Wednesday, March 5, when they face No. 7 ranked Princeton in Princeton, N.J., at 7:00 p.m.
