Scarlet Knights Set For BIG EAST Championships

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers women's tennis team earned the No. 8 seed for the upcoming BIG EAST Tennis Championships being held at the USF Varsity Courts in Tampa, Fla. beginning on April 17. The Scarlet Knights will face No. 9 seed Pittsburgh at 9 a.m. in first round action on Thursday.
The field will consist of 12 squads competing for the conference title and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship, set to begin on May 11-12 on campus sites to be determined.
The Scarlet Knights (13-8, 7-4 BIG EAST) enter the tournament playing some of their best tennis. RU has won three consecutive matches and five of its last seven. Rutgers topped Pittsburgh, 5-2, in the only meeting between the two teams on March 30 at the RU Tennis Complex.
Notre Dame, BIG EAST champions two of the last three seasons, earned the No. 1 seed, while Louisville garners the No. 2 spot. Defending-BIG EAST champion USF enters the tournament as the No. 3 seed. Marquette has earned the No. 4 seed, while DePaul is the No. 5 seed. Syracuse repeats as the No. 6 seed, with St. John's, Rutgers, Pittsburgh and West Virginia rounding out the top 10 as the No. 7-10 seeds, respectively. Connecticut and Georgetown complete the bracket as the No. 11 and No. 12 seeds.
The top four women's teams have earned byes, and the Nos. 5-12 seeds will open the championship on April 17.
Both championship matches are set for 9 a.m. on April 20 at the USF Varsity Courts.
