Rutgers Field Hockey Opens 2008 Season This Weekend

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers field hockey commences the 2008 season this weekend. The Scarlet Knights entertain Indiana on Friday, August 29 at 7:30 p.m. at RU Turf Field. The contest is the season opener for both teams.
Rutgers is coming off an eight-win season, the most victories for the program since 2000. The Scarlet Knights return 14 letterwinners and seven starters. RU is led by senior midfielder Amy Lewis (Hainesport, N.J.), the BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and a unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team.
Lewis led the BIG EAST with 20 goals and 44 points last season. She was also first among league leaders with six game-winning goals. Lewis finished the season ranked tops in the country in goals per game (1.05) and second among NCAA leaders in points per game (2.32).
RU is 1-0-1 versus the Hooisers, having last met the Big Ten opponent in 2002. IU posted an 8-10 mark last fall and welcome back 13 letterwinners and six starters in 2008.
After Indiana, the Scarlet Knights hit the road for their next three straight contests. On Sunday, August 31, they travel to West Chester for a 12:00 p.m. game.
