COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Rutgers registered its eighth win in its first nine games, posting a 3-0 BIG EAST victory over Georgetown on Friday evening at the University of Maryland Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.
Senior Amy Lewis (Hainesport, N.J.) scored two goals and junior Jessika Hoh (Allentown, Pa.) added another to give the Scarlet Knights their first league win of the year. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren DeCerbo (Tabernacle, N.J.) had seven saves.
"We didn't play our best today," head coach Liz Tchou said after the contest. "(Goalkeeper) Lauren DeCerbo was our savior. She was extremely focused in goal and made excellent stops."
Tchou added, "To tie our win total this early in the season is great for the program and good for the confidence of the team. We know the road ahead is very tough."
Rutgers (7-1, 1-1 BE) took the early lead and recorded what would be the game-winner in the 14th minute of play. Lewis, the nation's leading scorer, took a shot off a penalty corner. The attempt was blocked but the rebound found Lewis' stick and the back of the cage. The goal proved to be the fifth game-winner of the year for the senior forward.
With just over 10 minutes left in the first half, the Scarlet Knights added some insurance. Off a corner, Schawb fired a shot that took an unusual hop. GU keeper Deirdre Crovo laid out for the save but the ball made it over her and bounced into the cage.
The final tally came with less than seven minutes showing on the clock. Lewis would catalog her second goal of the game and 19th of the season
The teams tied in penalty corners with four apiece. Rutgers posted 10 shots to its opponents' eight. DeCerbo finished the game with seven saves.
With the win, the Scarlet Knights matched their entire win total in 2007 (8-11).
RU hosts New Hampshire on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 1:00 p.m. at RU Stadium Complex. The Wildcats are 4-5 on the year, having dropped a 3-2 overtime decision at Lafayette on Friday evening.
