PHILADELPHIA - Rutgers used a pair of goals, including the game-winner, from senior Amy Lewis to defeat Drexel, 3-2 on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Scarlet Knights improved to 3-0 on the season.
RU made the most out of their first penalty corner opportunity as Lewis drag-flicked a shot high to the left corner of the cage past Drexel goalkeeper Colleen McAndrew. With less than five minutes remaining in the half, the Dragons tied the contest at 1-1 on a goal by Susan Ciufo. Rutgers goalie Lyndsey Caliendo attempted to intercept the pass but Ciufo just touched the ball by the freshman keeper. Ciufo one-timed the ball into the empty cage for a knotted score at the half.
Just over three minutes into the second half, Rutgers' Katie Feeley fired a ball from outside the area after a Drexel foul. A deflection by a Drexel defender resulted in another RU lead when Jessika Hoh found the cage. Two minutes later, Drexel again tied the contest when a loose ball at the top of the arc was found and fired into the left part of the cage by Amanda Kicera.
With 22 minutes remaining, Lewis would deliver the game-winning score on a penalty stroke. The senior from Hainesport, N.J. has scored seven goals in her last three meetings with Drexel and now has eight goals in three games this season.
Drexel's best attempt to tie the game came with less than 90 seconds remaining as Ciufo corralled a ball at the right side of the arc and uncorked a shot toward the cage that was just deflected wide by Lauren DeCerbo.
Rutgers outshot the Dragons, 8-5, for the game and earned seven penalty corners to the Dragons' two.
RU takes on Pennsylvania on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 5:00 p.m.
