Q&A with Alison Hartwig
Jan 21 | Women's Gymnastics
When did you first get started in gymnastics?
I was five years old when I first took gymnastics classes.
What got you interested in gymnastics?
I used to joke around and tell people I could not play any sport with a "ball" in it. Not only did I have a lot of fun in gymnastics, but I just never liked any other sport. I was the kid in left field doing cartwheels and picking flowers.
What is your favorite event and why?
I love the balance beam. Once I arrived at Rutgers, I was able to really focus on beam and make it my best event.
What has been your favorite thing about the Rutgers program so far?
There are many things I love about the Rutgers program. The coaching staff is very supportive, both in and out of the gym, and I appreciate all they have done for me. I also enjoy time spent with the team and the friendships I have made. Lastly, our team makes an effort to have fun while working hard. Enjoying what we do makes it easier to motivate and encourage one another to do well.
What made you decide to come to Rutgers?
Rutgers has been a family school and I grew up in New Jersey rooting for the university. With its strong academic and athletic programs, I would not want to be anywhere else.
What is your favorite thing to do outside of gymnastics?
I enjoy drawing, painting, and other types of art. I also like to go shopping and hang out with friends.
If you could meet anyone in the world who would it be and why?
I would like to meet my mother's father who unfortunately passed away before I was born. He is the only grandparent that I was unable to meet.
What is something interesting that most people don't know about you?
I love crayons! I study for my classes by coloring my notes (it really works!).
What is your major and what is your desired profession upon graduation?
I double majored in Psychology and Sociology and have applied to
graduate programs to earn my doctorate in psychology. I am eagerly waiting to hear back about acceptance for the coming fall semester.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
In five years I hope to have become a licensed psychologist working with adolescents.
