PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 11, 2009) – The No. 10/12 Rutgers women’s soccer team needed an extra 4:43 to upend BIG EAST National Division foe DePaul, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Yurcak Field. Sophomore Julie Lancos (Belford, N.J.) scored the game-winning goal – her first of the season – on a free kick from the 30-yard line in the 94th minute. The Scarlet Knights move to 10-2-3 overall with a 4-1-2 mark in BIG EAST play, while DePaul falls to 8-6-2 overall, 3-4-0 in conference action.
“I am very proud of our girls today,” said head coach Glenn Crooks. “This game was for Ashley Jones (who left in the 22nd minute with an injury). The girls on our team continue to step up in the face of adversity and injuries.”
Four minutes into the extra period, the Scarlet Knights earned a free kick ten yards outside the box. Lancos sent a screamer towards the goal that DePaul netminder Claire Hanold could not get a hand on. The ball sank into the top right corner of the net. With the win, RU now moves to 2-0-3 in overtime games.
The Scarlet Knights found the equalizer in the 57th minute as a hand ball was called in the box against DePaul. Senior captain Jen Anzivino (Middletown, N.J.) stepped up for Rutgers and knocked it into the top left of the goal. The score was Anzivino’s second of the season and was the Scarlet Knight’s second goal off a penalty kick in 2009.
DePaul struck first, earning a corner in the 38th minute. Tara Strickland sent the ball into the box, towards the left side of the net. DPU’s Michelle Scandora headed the ball over the outstretched hands of Guthrie into the top left corner of the net.
Lancos earned a free kick with four minutes to go in the first half, but Hanold made the diving save to the left. Two minutes later, Rutgers junior Kelsey Dumont (Wrightstown, Pa.) corralled a ball from redshirt freshman Stefanee Pace (Kearny, N.J.), sending it towards the net, but Hanold made the stop.
RU outshot DPU 10-5 in regulation, taking four corner kicks to the Blue Demon’s three. The only shot taken in overtime resulted in the goal. A back-and-forth, hard-nosed game, the two squads committed 30 total fouls, including one yellow card issues to DePaul’s Kelly Blumberg.
The Scarlet Knights return to Yurcak Field Thursday, Oct. 15 to take on the Syracuse Orange. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
