Guthrie Earns BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Oct. 19, 2009) – Rutgers senior women’s soccer captain Erin Guthrie (Sparta, N.J.) earned BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honors following a 2-0-0 week for the Scarlet Knights. The netminder shut out both opponents, first on Thursday in a 2-0 win over Syracuse, and again on Saturday in a 1-0 win against RV/18 St. John’s.

This is the second time this season – sixth for her career – that Guthrie has been named Goalkeeper of the Week. The netminder stopped a season-high eight shots in a 1-0 Senior Day victory over the then-RV/18 Red Storm. The Sparta, N.J. local has totaled 42 shutouts in her career for the RU all-time record and leads the BIG EAST with a .43 goals against average.

Senior Jen Anzivino (Middletown, N.J.) earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for her performance over the weekend. The captain led the back to two shutouts over the weekend, allowing just 4.5 shots on goal per game, four total corner kicks and no goals. The Middletown, N.J. product played every minute of both games for the Scarlet Knights.

Guthrie also earned conference honors this season after a record weekend against Towson and then-No. 13/10 Penn State. In the 1-0 win over Towson, she broke the school record for shutouts with the 35th of her career. She notched her 36th at then-No. 13/10 Penn State – the first time the Nittany Lions had been shut out in 2009. Guthrie was also named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week twice in 2008 (Sept. 15 and Oct. 6) and twice in 2006 (Sept. 18 and Oct. 23).

The Scarlet Knights return to action Friday, Oct. 23 at Cincinnati and Sunday, Oct. 25 at Louisville for the final weekend of regular season soccer. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Scarlet Knights have already clinched a bye in the BIG EAST Tournament that commences Oct. 29 at campus sites.
