No. 9/15 Rutgers Finishes Regular Season On Road
Oct 21 | Women's Soccer
CINCINNATI, Ohio (Oct. 21, 2009) - The No. 9/15 Rutgers women's soccer team hits the road for the final weekend of regular season play, with a match at Cincinnati on Friday, Oct. 23 (7 p.m.), followed by a contest at Louisville on Sunday, Oct. 25 starting at 1 p.m. The Scarlet Knights (12-2-3, 7-1-2 BIG EAST) have already clinched a bye in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament, held Oct. 29-Nov. 8.
The Cincinnati game will be broadcast over internet radio through www.gobearcats.com. Sunday's game will be shown by CardsTV on CBS College Sports All-Access through www.UofLsports.com. Live stats will be available for both games on www.scarletknights.com.
The Scarlet Knights maintain a one-point lead over the Georgetown Hoyas for second place in the BIG EAST National Division with 20 points. RU is five points behind No. 7/8 Notre Dame.
RU clinched a berth in their 10th-straight BIG EAST Tournament with the 1-0 win over St. John's on Saturday. Rutgers has also already earned a bye to the Quarterfinals, held at campus sites. The Semifinals and Final will be held at Morrone Stadium on the Connecticut campus Nov. 6-8.
Rutgers remains unbeaten on the road this season, maintaining a 5-0-1 tally in away games. Cincinnati holds a 3-3 home record, while Louisville holds a 2-4-0 mark at home.
Through 17 games, the Scarlet Knights have dropped just two contests, which ties the lowest amount to this point in the season in program history (in 2006, RU went 13-2-2 through 17 games).
If Rutgers were to win both games this weekend, the squad would tie the record for most victories on the road with seven. That mark was previously set in 1986, when the Scarlet Knights held a 7-3-1 record in away games.
With two wins, the Scarlet Knights could also tie the record for most conference victories in a single season with eight, a mark set in 2006 (8-1-2 BIG EAST).
The Scarlet Knights lead the all-time series with the Bearcats 4-2-1, outscoring UC by a 10-6 mark. RU has failed to notch a win in the last two meetings, however, knotting to a 0-0 draw last season and losing 2-1 in 2007. Prior to that, Rutgers had been on a three-game win streak.
UC is led by redshirt sophomore Emily Hebbeler and junior Kendall Loggins. Hebbeler owns 14 points on the season on six goals and two assists. Loggins has scored seven of her 11 points in BIG EAST play. In goal for the Bearcats is Andrea Kaminski, who owns a 6-7-1 record on the year, 2-6-1 in the BIG EAST. The senior maintains a 1.35 GAA with four shutouts in 2009.
UC is under the direction of Michelle Salmon in her second season. Last season, Salmon led the Bearcats to their most successful season in the BIG EAST Conference. UC accomplished a 10-win season, earned its best finish in the BIG EAST regular season, and made a BIG EAST Quarterfinal appearance.
Rutgers boasts a 3-1 record all-time against Louisville. Last season, Caycie Gusman scored her third-consecutive game-winner to upend Louisville, 1-0.
The Cardinals are paced by Lindsay Boling and Giselle Mangal, each with five points in 2009. Louisville has scored just 10 goals in 2009. In net for UofL is freshman Taylor Vancil, who has played every minute for the Cardinals. The South Elgin, Ill. native maintains a 1.47 GAA and has tallied three shutouts on the season.
On the sidelines for Louisville is Karen Ferguson-Dayes in her 10th season at UofL. The winningest coach in Cardinal history, Ferguson-Dayes has improved the team's record nearly every season she has been at the helm of Louisville.
