Rutgers Volleyball Drops Road Match at Fordham, 3-1

Bronx, N.Y. (October 21, 2009) – The Rutgers volleyball team held its own in the first three sets against Fordham Wednesday night but stumbled in the fourth set, allowing the Rams to capture a 3-1 home victory at Rose Hill Gym in Bronx, N.Y.

The Rams (10-15, 1-7 A-10) knocked off the Scarlet Knights (8-14, 1-6 BIG EAST) by scores of 25-17, 25-27, 25-22, 25-11. RU has now dropped four straight matches. Rutgers still leads the all-time series with Fordham by a 6-4 mark.

“Fordham executed very well in all aspects towards the end of the match and we didn’t,” said Rutgers head coach CJ Werneke. “We need to figure some things out and play at a high level on every play to get back on the right track.”

Junior outside hitter Caitlin Saxton (Encinitas, Calif.) had a strong all-around performance as she posted 14 kills, 15 digs, a career-best four service aces and two total blocks. The co-captain’s double-double is her seventh on the season.

Senior libero Jamie Godfrey (Rahway, N.J.) notched 11 digs to increase her career total to 838, which ranks 10th in school history. The co-captain is nine digs away from tying former Scarlet Knight Mara Prisditis (1994-97) for ninth place.

Freshmen setter Stephanie Zielinski (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) led all student-athletes with 29 assists. Zielinski leads the Scarlet Knights in assists this season with 547.

Katie Wells led the Rams in kills with 15 on an impressive .778 attack percentage.

Rutgers will continue its four-match road swing this Saturday when it travels to interstate rival Seton Hall for a 2 p.m. contest
