SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (October 23, 2009) – The Rutgers volleyball team returns to BIG EAST play Saturday afternoon when it travels to intrastate rival Seton Hall for a 2 p.m. match at the Walsh Gym in South Orange, N.J. Saturday’s contest will serve as SHU’s “Dig Pink” match, which is part of a national campaign against breast cancer.
The Scarlet Knights (8-14, 1-6 BIG EAST) are in the middle of a four-match road swing that started last Wednesday at Fordham where RU dropped a 3-1 contest. Rutgers is currently on a four-match skid.
The Pirates (8-14, 2-5 BIG EAST) are also on a four-match slide and most recently fell at home to Cincinnati by a 3-0 score this past Sunday. Head coach Kris Zeiter is in his fourth season leading Seton Hall.
“We know what we have to do, we just have to go out and show it on the court,” said Rutgers head coach CJ Werneke. “We haven’t played at a high level consistently these last few matches. We need to focus on every point throughout the match against Seton Hall.”
Junior outside hitter Caitlin Saxton (Encinitas, Calif.) has been the Scarlet Knights’ ace this season. The co-captain leads the team in kills (278) and service aces (19).
Senior libero Jamie Godfrey (Rahway, N.J.) currently ranks 10th in school history in career digs with 838. The co-captain is nine digs away from tying former Scarlet Knight Mara Prisditis (1994-97) for ninth place.
Sarah Osmun leads the Pirates in kills this season with 272. The junior outside hitter was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll this past week.
Following the Seton Hall match, Rutgers will travel to DePaul on Saturday, Oct. 31 and Notre Dame on Sunday, Nov. 1.
