Rutgers Softball Unveils 2010 Schedule

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 26, 2009) – The Rutgers softball team will compete in a challenging 2010 schedule, head coach Jay Nelson announced Monday. The Scarlet Knights face nine squads that played in the 2009 NCAA Tournament, including Arizona State, a participant in the Women’s College World Series.
“This year’s schedule is challenging and diverse,” said head coach Jay Nelson. “This team will face 11 teams ranked nationally in the Top 25, play in a number of diverse locations and compete against 16 different conferences in 2009. Our priority in making the schedule was to find games that would present a competitive challenge to prepare our student-athletes for conference play. Our team is looking forward to the challenges of this year’s competition in their quest for softball excellence.”
RU starts off in Tempe, Az. for the three-day Arizona State Tournament from Feb. 19-21. Rutgers will face Arizona State twice over the weekend, as well as NCAA Tournament qualifiers Iowa and Texas State, along with Illinois State.
The following weekend, the Scarlet Knights travel to Chattanooga, Tenn. for the UT Chattanooga Tournament. On Friday, Feb. 26, RU takes on Miami of Ohio and Chattanooga – an NCAA Tournament participant. On Saturday, the Scarlet Knights face Eastern Tennessee State and Austin Peay. Rutgers closes out the weekend with Wright State.
The third tournament brings RU to Tampa, Fla. for the USF Tournament. The Scarlet Knights start off with NCAA participant Bradley and Memphis on Friday, March 5. Rutgers continues Saturday with Ball State and a rematch with UT Chattanooga. Sunday pits RU against Western Michigan.
The Scarlet Knights close out their tournament schedule with the Oklahoma State Mizuno Classic March 12-14. Rutgers will face Wisconsin and Prairie View A&M on Friday, with Oklahoma State – an NCAA Championship qualifier – on Saturday. A playoff tournament, the No. 2 and 3 seeds will match up at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, with the No. 1 taking on the No. 4 team directly following. Sunday will hold a consolation and championship game.
Rutgers stays on the road to take on Wichita State at 5 p.m. on Monday, March 15. Thursday, March, 18, the Scarlet Knights face Missouri State in a doubleheader at Springfield, Mo.
RU comes back to the northeast for doubleheaders at Stony Brook (March 24), Princeton (March 27) and Long Island University (March 30).
BIG EAST play starts in the month of April, as Rutgers travels to Notre Dame for a three-game series against the BIG EAST Champion Irish. The Scarlet Knights play one game on Thursday, April 1 at 6 p.m. and back-to-back contests on Saturday, April 3, starting at noon.
Rutgers finally unpacks their bags on April 7 for a home doubleheader against Hofstra beginning at 3 p.m. The Scarlet Knights stay at the RU Softball Complex for three games against Connecticut, with back-to-back games on April 10 and a single game the following day. Rutgers plays another two against Louisville on April 14, before stepping out of conference play to take on Army in back-to-back games on April 15.
RU hits the road again for a three game series in Chicago against DePaul on April 17-18. The squad will play one game on April 21 against Monmouth.
Over the weekend of April 24-25, the Scarlet Knights compete against Providence with back-to-back matches on Saturday and one game on Sunday. RU then travels to Georgetown (April 28) for a doubleheader and St. John’s for a three-game series on May 1-2.
Rutgers closes out the regular season at home against Pittsburgh on May 8-9 with two games on Saturday and one on Sunday.
The Scarlet Knights are slated for 56 games this season, including 15 at the RU Softball Complex and 22 against eight BIG EAST squads.
