
Rutgers Tennis Competes at ITA Regional Championships

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Oct. 26, 2009) – Four student-athletes from the Rutgers tennis team participated in the ITA Regional Championships in New Haven, Conn. over the weekend. Junior Amy Zhang (Plano, Texas), seeded in the main draw, defeated Adi Petrova of Buffalo (6-3, 4-6, 6-3) before falling to Yale’s Jessie Rhee, 6-3, 6-0.
"We competed very well at the ITA Regionals, where we won the matches we should have won and came up a little short in matches against better players,” said Rutgers head coach Benjamin Bucca. “Our team is very excited, energized and confident as we await the team portion of our schedule starting in January."
Zhang competed with sophomore Jennifer Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) in doubles play, falling to Rhee and Sarah Lederhandler of Yale, 9-7. Also in doubles action, sophomore Morgan Ivey (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) coupled with senior Katherine Arlak (Leonia, N.J.) to defeat Dartmouth’s Jesse Adler and Sara Leonard, 8-5. In the next round, Ivey and Arlak fell to Alex Kelleher and Olga Khmyley of Boston College (8-5).
In singles play, Holzberg came back to defeat Kiersten Leikem of Rhode Island (2-6, 6-3, 6-0). The sophomore was upended by Hilary Bartlett of Princeton, 3-6, 2-6.
This concludes the fall season for Rutgers tennis. The squad will be back on the court Jan. 31 for a BIG EAST match at Syracuse.
