PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers volleyball team will step out of conference play Wednesday night as the squad hosts Hofstra at College Avenue Gym for a 7 p.m. contest.
The match will be streamed live on Knightvision Broadband on www.scarletknights.com. Live stats will also be available at www.scarletknights.com.
Fans are encouraged to get to the gym early as the Rutgers athletic marketing department will be on hand to give out t-shirts to the first 100 fans that arrive at the match.
The Scarlet Knights (7-10, 1- 3 BIG EAST) fell at Syracuse and Marquette, each by a 3-0 mark, this past weekend.
The Pride (5-13, 1-2 CAA) is under the instruction of second-year head coach Kristina Hernandez and is in the middle of a five-match road swing. Last weekend, Hofstra fell to UNC Wilmington (3-0) on Friday and to Georgia State (3-2) on Sunday.
The series between Rutgers and Hofstra is knotted at 15-15. The last time the two squads met was at the 2003 Madison Invitational where Rutgers won by a 3-1 margin. The Scarlet Knights have won three straight matches in the series.
"We look to get back to the way we were playing earlier in the season," said Rutgers head coach CJ Werneke. "A week ago, we were playing well and on cloud nine and then we got a wakeup call this past weekend. We have to get back to the fundamentals. We are looking forward to competing against Hofstra. They are a strong team that is normally at the top of its conference."
Junior Emma Chrystal (Kalamazoo, Mich.) has proven to be a multi-talented weapon for the Scarlet Knights this season. The 5-foot-10 outside hitter is third on the team in kills (136), digs (132), assists (42), and total blocks (23). She is tied for team-lead, with fellow junior Caitlin Saxton (Encinitas, Calif.), in service aces with 13. The Kalamazoo, Mich. native has tallied three double-doubles this season.
Freshmen have played a huge role in the team's turnaround this season. Freshman setter Stephanie Zielinski (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) leads the squad in assists with 447. Freshman middle blocker Alex Jones (Chesapeake, Va.) is second on the team in total blocks with 31. Freshman outside hitter Kylie Orr (Kettering, Ohio) is fourth on team in kills with 83.
Senior outside hitter Monica Knight leads the Pride in kills with 242 this season. Moore posted 14 kills, eight digs and two blocks against Georgia State on Sunday.
Following the Hofstra match, the Scarlet Knights will travel to Villanova on Sunday for a 2 p.m. contest.
