Player Profiles: Celeste Dayawon and Abbey Houston

The Rutgers Softball team welcomes eight newcomers to the team for the 2010 season, including Celeste Dayawon (Hazlet, NJ) and Abbey Houston (New Egypt, NJ).
Dayawon comes to Rutgers from Hazlet, N.J., where she attended Raritan High School. During her high school career, she started all four years at third base in the N.J. A Central Division. The Hazlet local paced the Rockets in runs scored during her junior year.
Dayawon played for the New Jersey Intensity and New Jersey Fury on the club level. She competed with the New Jersey Fury for five years, leading the team to six national tournaments during her stay. From 2007-2009, she was named team captain of the Fury.
During Dayawon’s stay at Raritan Valley, she also played field hockey. She won three varsity letters, and was named Player of the Year in 2006. During her senior campaign, she was named team captain and tied the school record for most assists.
A true student-athlete, Dayawon was a member of National Honors Society, and was her high school’s Student Council President.
At Rutgers, Dayawon plans to major in Environment Science, and is part of the Achievement In Math and Science (AIMS) community.
Houston comes to Rutgers from New Egypt, N.J., where she attended New Egypt High School. During her four-year career, the right-handed pitched achieved All-State and All-Conference honors four times. In 2008, she also gained All-Group 1 First Team, and All-Ocean First Team accolades.
As a freshman, Houston was named Rookie of the Year by the Star Ledger, and was third Team All-State. The hurler led her high school to a Group 1 State Championship that year.
After graduation, Houston was inducted into the New Egypt High School Hall of Fame. The her pitcher boasted a career 818 strikeouts, a .90 ERA and a record of 64-20 over four years.
She also played for the New Jersey Breakers Gold and the West Jersey Witches on the club level. Academically, Houston was a member of New Egypt’s High School’s National Honors Society. Her sister, Shannon, plays softball at UC Berkeley.
