PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Nov. 9, 2009) – The Rutgers women’s soccer team will learn its NCAA Tournament matchup Monday night when the 64-team field is released. The bracket will be revealed on ESPNews at 8:00 p.m. and will let the No. 12 Scarlet Knights know who their first-round opponent will be and where the contest will take place.
Rutgers currently sits at No. 35 in the NCAA RPI rankings. The squad has four wins over teams ranked in the RPI top 60, including at No. 10 Penn State, at No. 27 Marquette, vs. No. 34 St. John’s, and at No. 60 Georgetown.
RU’s three losses came at the hands of RPI No. 6 Notre Dame, RPI No. 21 West Virginia in the BIG EAST Quarterfinals and RPI No. 43 San Diego. In both the losses to West Virginia and Notre Dame, the opponent scored with less than seven minutes remaining.
The Scarlet Knights boast a 13-3-4 record despite losing six starters for a combined 83 games in 2009. RU got off to a 4-0-1 start – the best start in 13 years when the Scarlet Knights began 5-0-0 in 1996. The squad also lost just two games in the regular season, which tied the lowest amount in program history.
Rutgers has allowed just ten goals all year for a .50 goals against average (a mark that ties the lowest in school history), allowing just four shots on goal per game.
Senior keeper Erin Guthrie (Sparta, N.J.) – named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year, boasts a .46 GAA – best in the BIG EAST and sixth in the NCAA.
Rutgers has gotten production from 14 players this season. After losing their top goal scorer and top assist man from last season, Ashley Jones (Feasterville, Pa.) stepped up to score eight goals and add three assists after entering the season with just four goals scored. When RU lost Jones to injury, seven different players scored the last seven goals of the season.
After marking the NCAA Tournament just once in 16 years before head coach Glenn Crooks, the Scarlet Knights have earned a berth four of the last nine, including last season’s run to the Sweet Sixteen.
