Rutgers Maintains Four Wrestlers in InterMat National Rankings

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Dec. 18, 2009) – Four Rutgers wrestlers were listed in the latest InterMat rankings released this week. Rutgers also continues to receive votes in the NWCA/USA Today Division I Team Coaches Poll.
Redshirt senior Lamar Brown (Red Bank, N.J.) joined junior Billy Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.), sophomore Trevor Melde (Hewitt, N.J.) andredshirt junior Dominick Russo (Netcong, N.J.) in their respective weight classes of the InterMat Rankings. Russo (No. 8), Ashnault (No. 18) and Melde (No. 19) all kept their previous ranking as Brown appeared at No. 18.
Joseph Langel (Howell, N.J.) and freshman Vincent Dellefave (Toms River, N.J) were also listed in national rankings.
Russo and Ashnault each own a team-best 11 wins. Russo suffered his first loss of the season last Saturday against No. 12 Ryan Tomei of Pittsburgh by a defensive pin. Along with InterMat, Russo is listed in four other national rankings and as high as No. 7 by WrestlingReport.com. D1CollegeWrestling.net (No. 8) and Amateur Wrestling News (No. 9) also listed Russo as a top-10 heavyweight. Win-Magazine.com ranks Russo at No. 12
Ashnault picked up his sixth pin of the season against Pittsburgh by knocking off Jimmy Conroyin in 6:53.
Ashnault leads the team with 39 dual points. Ashnault is listed as high as No. 14 by both WrestlingReport.com and Amateur Wrestling News. D1CollegeWrestling.net boasts Ashnault at No. 15.
Brown is 9-3 on the season and defeated Pittsburgh’s Matt Wilps by a 3-1 decision in overtime in his last match. Brown was listed as high as No. 16 by D1CollegeWrestling.net. Win-Magazine.com and WrestlingReport.com ranked Brown at No. 20 and No. 22, respectively.
Melde has posted a 10-3 record this season and notched two pins and three major decisions.WrestlingReport.com and D1CollegeWrestling net acknowledged Melde in their rankings at No. 17 and No. 18, respectively.
WrestlingReport.com put both Vincet Dellefave (Toms River, N.J.) and Joseph Lagel (Howell, N.J.) at No. 28 in the 125-pound listing. Dellefave is 4-3 on the season and Langel is 9-5.
Rutgers will be back in action at the Midlands Tournament. The event runs Dec. 29-30.
