PRINCETON, N.J. (Dec. 5, 2009) – The Rutgers wrestling team picked up two convincing victories Saturday afternoon against in-state EIWA rival Princeton and VMI at the Dillon Gymnasium in Princeton, N.J. The Scarlet Knights won 19 of their 20 matches.
RU (5-3, 1-1 EIWA) blanked VMI (0-2) by a 44-0 score and Princeton (2-1, 0-1 EIWA) by a 34-3 mark.
“It was a good bounce back from last weekend,” said Rutgers head coach
Scott Goodale. “I thought we wrestled hard in all of our matches. We are really benefiting from the tough tournaments and teams we are facing right now.”
Rutgers won all 10 matches against VMI and No. 9 Bill Ashnault (South Plainfield), Trevor Melde (Hewitt, N.J.) and No. 20 David Greenwald (Union, N.J.) all picked up pin falls against VMI. Greenwald has claimed three pin fall victories this season.
The Scarlet Knights claimed nine victories against the Tigers. No. 9 Dominick Russo (Netcong, N.J.) remains undefeated (11-0) after winning by forfeit against VMI and picking up RU’s fastest pin fall of the season against Princeton’s Bobby Grogran by a 1:08 time.
Redshirt freshman Daniel Rinaldi (Lodi, N.J.) scored his second major decision of the season by knocking off Princeton’s Kurt Brendel, 13-4.
Freshman Daniel Seidenberg (Red Bank, N.J.) picked up his first major decision of his college career with an 8-0 victory over Princeton’sTravis Erdman.
RU Newcomer Ashnault improved his record to 10-2 on the season and 7-1 in dual action by defeating Princeton’s Zach Bintliff, 8-1.
Rutgers will travel to Pittsburgh for its next match on Saturday, Dec.12, at 5 p.m.
