RU Volleyball Signs Four Prep Standouts
Dec 09 | Women's Volleyball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Dec. 9, 009) The Rutgers volleyball team has signed four prep standouts for the 2010 season, head coach CJ Werneke announced Tuesday.
Brittany Bozzini, Mariah Horvath, Tiffany Regmund and Sheridan Taylor will be joining Rutgers next season.
Bozzini, Horvath and Taylor are all from California, giving Rutgers five student-athletes, including Caitlin Saxton (Encinitas, Calif.) and Kelsey Ross (Orinda, Calif.) from the Golden State.
“We are very excited about adding these four players to our program next year,” said Werneke. “They are all very experienced and good volleyball players. All four of them have the ability to play multiple positions which will give us options and depth next year.”
Bozzini, a right side hitter-middle blocker, highlights the group. The San José, Calif. native hails from ArchBishop Mitty High School, which won the CIF Division II State Championship this past weekend and will end the season as the No. 1-ranked team in the country by PrepVolleyball.com. Bozzini has spent the past seven years on the Vision Club volleyball team. The multi-position standout also excelled in the classroom as she was named to the 2008 National Honor Society.
“Brittany will bring a lot of experience and competiveness to our program as she has won at every level she has been at, said Werneke. “Her competitive nature is second to none and she will bring that intensity to our program. She will bring diversity as well as she has played middle at ArchBishop Mitty High School, the 2009 National Champion, and right side in club for her nationally Ranked Vision Club. She is a great blocker at both the middle and right side position. She knows how to score offensively from either position.”
Manhattan Beach, Calif. native Taylor, a five-foot-10 middle blocker, comes to Rutgers from volleyball powerhouse Mira Costa High School. Taylor and the Mustangs won back-to-back National and State Championships during her freshman and sophomore year. She was recently named to 2009 Durango Classic All-Tournament team. As a junior, Taylor earned First Team honors for CIF All-Area and All-Bay League. Taylor won a gold medal at the 2007 Junior Olympics.
“Sheridan will bring quickness and savvy to the middle position for us next year,” commented Werneke. “As an experienced middle in both high school and club, her knowledge of the position and the game of volleyball will help our program and make our gym better next year. She is a very quick and dynamic middle that will add depth to that position next year. She also brings in a ton of playing experience to our program as she too has been a winner at every level. Her volleyball knowledge and experience separates her from other middles.”
Horvath attended Poway High School and earned First Team Palomar All League honors. The outside hitter claimed Second Team Division I honors in 2008. She was a member of the Epic Volleyball club.
“Mariah is the third recruit coming from California and she has played all three front court positions during her high school and club career,” said Werneke. “She has a great arm swing as she hits a heavy ball and has the power to terminate at this level. Her versatility at all three positions will also give us depth along the net and add some much needed competition in our gym.”
Outside hitter-middle blocker Regmund arrives “On the Banks” from Bryan High School in Bryan, Texas. She will be one of two Scarlet Knights from the Lone Star State along with Kallie Pence (College Station, Texas).
“Tiffany has also played multiple positions in high school and club, in playing both the outside and middle positions,” commented Werneke. “She is a six-rotation player that has a great combination of offense and defense, as she just finds the court offensively and has a knack for the ball defensively. She is a very steady player that has a quiet confidence and composure during pressure situations and that is one of her best qualities as she plays every point with the same focus and intensity.”
Regmund was named to the All-Texas and All-District team in 2008. She helped lead her Brazos Valley Club team to a 25th place finish at the 2009 Junior Olympic National Championships. The six-foot-one multi-positioned standout earned All-District honors as a sophomore.
