Rutgers Women's Tennis Wins Fourth Straight BIG EAST Match

QUEENS, N.Y. – The Rutgers women’s tennis team, which has won six of its last seven matches, picked up a BIG EAST road win Tuesday, topping St. John’s 5-2.
The Scarlet Knights, which have won four consecutive league matches, improve to 11-4 overall and 5-2 in BIG EAST play. St. John’s falls to 4-12 overall and 3-6 in the conference.
Rutgers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by winning two of three doubles matches. Sophomore Amy Zhang (Plano, Texas) and senior Polina Zaretser (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won at No. 1 doubles and freshmen Morgan Ivey (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) and Jennifer Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) picked up a win at the No. 3 spot. Both duos won convincingly, 8-0.
In singles, the Scarlet Knights swept the top three spots. Zhang defeated Ira Aleksova 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1, Katherine Arlak (Leonia, N.J.) upended Gaby Gasuinnite 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 2 and Holzberg topped Ksenia Mikhaylova 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 3 spot. Ivey picked up RU’s other singles point, cruising past Nakita Austin 6-2, 6-0.
The Scarlet Knights will continue a four-match BIG EAST road swing with matches against West Virginia and Pittsburgh this weekend. RU will take on WVU on Saturday and Pitt on Sunday. Both matches will be played in Morgantown, W. Va.
