Rutgers Tennis Competes Against Region's Best At Brown Invitational

Sophomore Jennifer Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) and junior Amy Zhang (Plano, Texas) each had three wins and one loss on the weekend. As a doubles team, the pair went 2-1 in the tournament.
Holzberg recorded a statement win over Bianca Aboubakare of Brown, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 1-0 (14-12) in modified scoring. Aboubakare is ranked in the top-ten of the region. In the next round, Holzberg defeated Petra Santini of BU, 7-5, 6-1. Her third win of the weekend came against Emily Ellis of Brown, 6-4, 6-2. Holzberg’s lone loss, against Stefanie Nunic, was shortened due to weather, 8-2.
Zhang also had a solid tournament, recording her first win over Francine Whu of BU, 6-3 before Whu retired. In the next round, Zhang lost to Boston College’s Katarina Gajic, 2-6, 6-3, 10-5 in modified scoring. Against BU’s Petra Santini, Zhang earned the victory, 6-4, 6-1. The junior also defeated Myrth Molenveld of Auburn in the final match of the tournament.
Playing as doubles, Zhang and Holzberg defeated Boston University’s Nunic and Jessica Linero, winning 8-6. In the next round, the pair faced Aboubakare and Cassandra Herzberg of Brown. A hard-fought match, Zhang and Holzberg went down in the tiebreaker, 9-7. The Scarlet Knights went on to defeat Fani Chifchieva and Caroline Thornton of Auburn, 9-4 in the tiebreaker.
Rutgers continues its fall season Oct. 9-11 at the USTA Invitational held at the NYC National Tennis Center.
