Russo Rises, Ashnault and Brown Remain in InterMat Rankings

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Jan. 13, 2010) – Redshirt junior Dominick Russo (Netcong, N.J.) of the Rutgers wrestling team rose to No. 9 and junior Billy Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.) and redshirt senior Lamar Brown (Red Bank, N.J.) remained in the InterMat individual rankings, the Web site announced Wednesday.
Ashnault is listed at No. 17 in the 133-pound class and 197-pounder Brown appears at No. 19.
Sophomore Trevor Melde (Hewitt, N.J.) and redshirt freshman Joseph Langel (Howell, N.J.) were also listed in national rankings.
Last weekend, Rutgers picked up convincing victories over Army, Boston University, Brown, Harvard and USMMA to improve to 10-4.
Russo and Ashnault are tied with a team-best 19 wins. Russo owns a RU-best 14 pins and Ashnault is right behind him with 10 pins.
Along with InterMat, Russo is listed as the ninth-best heavyweight by three other publications – Win-Magazine, Amateur Wrestling News and D1CollegeWrestling.net. WrestlingReport.com posted Russo at No. 10.
Ashnault is listed as high as No. 15 by D1CollegeWrestling.net and given recognition by three other outlets, with WrestlingReport.com (No. 16), Amateur Wrestling News (No. 20) and Win-Magazine (No. 20).
Brown owns a 14-4 record this season, including a 7-3 dual mark. The fifth-year senior is also ranked by D1CollegeWrestling.net (No. 17) and WrestlingReport.com (No. 22).
Melde has compiled a 15-5 record this season, including a 9-2 mark in dual competition. The Hewitt, N.J. native is listed as high as No. 20 via Amateur Wrestling News. WrestlingReport.com posted Melde at No. 21 and D1CollegeWrestling.net gave him a No. 23 ranking.
Langel had a dominating performance last Sunday as he claimed major decisions in all three of his matches. Langel is 16-5 this season with five major decisions. WrestlingReport.com listed Langel as the 29th-best 125-pounder in the country.
Rutgers will be back in action this Saturday when the squad travels to East Lansing, Mich. for a quad-meet with Michigan State, Findlay and Eastern Michigan.
