
Rutgers Gymnastics Places Fourth At Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (January 30, 2010) – The Rutgers gymnastics team posted a 190.550 to place fourth in a highly-competitive quad meet Saturday afternoon inside the Comcast Center on the campus of the University of Maryland. West Virginia took top honors with a 194.550, while Maryland was second with a 193.925 and Denver placed third with a 192.950.
In just her fifth collegiate meet, freshman Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.) led the Scarlet Knights in three of the four events including the all-around, pacing RU in the vault and floor exercise and on the bars.
The Scarlet Knights scored a season-high 48.300 in the vault, led by Zito’s career-best 9.750 to tie for sixth in the event. Seniors Alyssa Lewandowski (Linden, N.J.) and Laura Sevarino (Cheshire, Conn.) were right behind with a 9.675 to tie for 13th.
Rutgers also posted a season-high score on bars with a 47.825, led by Zito’s 9.550. Sophomore Nicole Schwartz (Somerset, N.J.) registered a 9.525 to place 17th overall.
Zito’s 9.625 in the floor exercise placed her 14th overall. Fellow freshman Nicole Romano (Livingston, N.J.) scored a 9.500 to place 15th.
Junior Leigh Heignbaugh (Sicklerville, N.J.) scored a career-best 9.725 to pace the Scarlet Knights and tie for sixth overall on the balance beam. Sevarino recorded a 9.675 to tie for ninth, while Schwartz scored as 9.575 to tie for 14th in the event.
Zito also led Rutgers in the all-around with a 38.250 to place fifth, while Romano placed seventh with a 37.950 and Sevarino placed eighth with a 37.650.
Rutgers travels to Pittsburgh, Pa. next Friday for a 7:00 p.m. meet with Pittsburgh, Iowa State and Brockport.
