PISCATAWAY, N.J. (January 8, 2010) – The Rutgers gymnastics team opens the 2010 season at the Livingston Recreation Center Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. meet against East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) foe New Hampshire.
The Scarlet Knights head into 2010 with 20 letterwinners returning to the veteran group. RU will be bolstered by the healthy return of several top gymnasts who were injured a year ago, including senior all-arounder Laura Sevarino (Cheshire, Conn.) and senior Prishani Seebadri (Wenonah, N.J.). They are part of a three-member senior class that also includes Alyssa Lewandowski (Linden, N.J.).
Five of the six Scarlet Knights who earned invitations to the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Nationals are back this season, including sophomore Danae Johnson (Silver Spring, Md.), who earned First Team All-American honors in the floor exercise at the event last winter. The group also includes Lewandowski, juniors Kiah Banfield (Newbury Park, Calif.) and Maddie Zwiebel (Bridgewater, N.J.), and sophomore Nicole Schwartz (Somerset, N.J.).
They will lead a talented group of newcomers that figures to make an immediate impact “On the Banks” in 2010.
“As a coaching staff, we are excited to open the new season and challenge our team to reach new heights this year,” said head coach Chrystal Chollet-Norton. “We return a lot of gymnasts this year, including some veterans who were injured for most of last season. We are also anxious to see our talented newcomers compete at the collegiate level. We believe they can have success early on. If we stay healthy, we can have a very successful season.”
Saturday’s meet matches a pair of veteran coaches as Scarlet Knights’ head coach Chrystal Chollet-Nortonbegins her 24th year with the Scarlet Knights against 31-year New Hampshire mentor Gail Goodspeed.
New Hampshire heads into 2010 34th-ranked nationally after finishing 18-12 last winter and a berth in the NCAA Northeast Regionals. The Wildcats return 13 letterwinners from last year’s team, including six seniors.
Rutgers dropped a pair of decisions to New Hampshire during the 2009 regular season, falling on the road 191.575-185.275 in the season opener and 193.400-187.525 in a quad meet at Penn State. RU is 3-11 all-time against UNH.
The Scarlet Knights will travel to Raleigh, N.C. next Friday to face NC State in their first road meet of the 2010 campaign.
