PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 15, 2010) – Gusting winds and chilly temperatures hampered playing conditions during the first round of the RU Women’s Invitational, which was halted due to darkness on Friday at the Rutgers University Golf Course. The opening round of the 20-team tournament will be completed Saturday morning with the second round of the 36-hole event to immediately follow on the par 72, 6,337-yard course.
Seventeen of the participating squads concluded the first round on Friday. 113 student-athletes are competing in the annual event, which was won by Boston College the past two seasons.
Rutgers was able to finish the opening round on Friday and posted a 347 team score.
Leading the way for the Scarlet Knights was senior team captain Jeanne Waters (West Sayville, N.Y.), who posted an 83. Rounding out the scorecard for Rutgers were sophomores Karen Cash (Allendale, N.J.) and Brittany Weddell (Buzzards Bay, Mass.), and juniors Elisa Mateer (Marmora, N.J.) and Lizzy Carl (Mendota Heights, Minn.). Cash and Mateer both finished with first round 87’s, while Carl shot 90 and Weddell turned-in a 91.
Under the leadership of Director of Golf Maura Waters-Ballard, the Scarlet Knights will look to improve their scores in warmer, but still expectedly windy, conditions on Saturday. Results will be posted on the athletics web site.
