Queens, N.Y. (Oct. 17, 2010) – For the first time this season, the Rutgers women’s soccer team went to overtime, playing St. John’s to a 0-0 draw Sunday afternoon at Belson Stadium.
RU (8-8-1, 3-5-1) was outshot by STJ (6-8-2, 3-5-1) by a 19-18 margin on the afternoon, including 5-1 in the overtime periods. Rutgers put the most pressure on St. John’s in the second half, taking three more shots overall and five tallies on goal.
The Scarlet Knights and Red Storm each had seven shots in the first half, although RU notched two on goal while redshirt sophomore Emmy Simpkins (Concord, N.C.) was not tested for the first 45 minutes.
Simpkins and freshman Samantha Perretty (Parkland, Fla.) split time in net for the second-straight match, as neither allowed a goal. Perretty tallied two saves on the afternoon.
In overtime, RU fought off three STJ shots and a corner in the first three minutes. The Scarlet Knights were unable to get a shot off in the first overtime period. Senior Kelsey Dumont (Wrightstown, Pa.) headed a ball high in the 108thminute for the only RU shot in the extra 20 minutes.
Redshirt junior Tricia DiPaolo (Sparta, N.J.) notched a shot in the 60thminute, but STJ netminder Kristin Russell made the save. Captain Karla Schacher (Tofield, Alberta) blasted the ball towards the net 10 minutes later, but Russell came up with another save.
In the 53rdminute, redshirt senior Gina DeMaio (Parsippany, N.J.) took a corner kick, booting the ball into the box for redshirt sophomore Shannon Woeller (Vancouver, Canada). The back headed a shot towards the net, but it was blocked by a STJ defender.
After stifling a St. John’s attack early in the first three minutes, DiPaolo rocketed off a shot in the ninth minute that Russell had to save. Redshirt sophomore Stefanee Pace (Kearny, N.J.) tested Russell again in the 22ndminute.
The Scarlet Knights return home for the final weekend of the regular season Oct. 22-24, taking on Cincinnati and Louisville at Yurcak Field.
