
Rutgers Women's Soccer Falls to DePaul, 2-0

Chicago, Ill. (Oct. 8, 2010) – Rutgers women’s soccer dropped Friday night’s match to DePaul, 2-0, at Wish Field. The Scarlet Knights move to 8-6 overall on the season and 3-3 in BIG EAST play. The Blue Demons advance to 9-4-2 overall and 4-2 in conference action.
The Blue Demons launched an offensive attack early, earning three shots and a corner in the first 5:27, including a goal by Tara Strickland. Ashleigh Goddard moved the ball to Lauren Pagone who sent it ahead for Strickland. Behind the back line, the senior midfielder notched a one-on-one opportunity with goalkeeper Emmy Simpkins (Concord, N.C.) and hit the right side of the net to give DPU a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute.
DePaul scored again in the 23rd minute, as Goddard rocketed a ball off Simpkins into the net giving the Blue Demons a 2-0 advantage.
RU tallied an opportunity in the 10th minute, as redshirt senior Gina DeMaio (Parsippany, N.J.) took a shot towards goal that was blocked. The Scarlet Knights earned a corner kick, but were unable to capitalize.
Redshirt sophomore April Price (Mechanicsville, Va.) headed the ball towards the net in the 39th minute, but sent it just high.
DeMaio took another shot in the 47th minute, but it went wide. RU notched another corner, but could not find the net.
DePaul outshot Rutgers 8-4, although RU was awarded six corners to DPU’s two. Simpkins grabbed four saves in the effort.
Rutgers continues its Midwest trip as the squad takes on Notre Dame Sunday, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on ESPNU with Beth Mowins and Cat Whitehill on the call.
