Greg Schiano Press Conference Quotes - Nov. 16
Nov 16 | Football
Opening Statement:
“Thanks for coming. We had a good practice this morning. The guys are excited about the opportunity we have out at Cincinnati. Cincinnati is a good football team. Offensively, they have a very good quarterback, three receivers that I think as a group are as good as we have played and a tailback that is very productive. So, defensively, we have our hands full. Offensively, we are running into a rush defense that I think is 26th in the country. It is going to be a challenge, going on the road Saturday night game at Nippert Stadium. I am looking forward to it. I can’t wait.”
Do you know who is going to start at quarterback between Chas [Dodd] or Tom [Savage]?
“I haven’t decided yet. We need to, as a staff, evaluate the practice tapes and think about everything and then I will make a decision. I don’t know exactly when.”
Will your decision be based on who gives you the best chance to win?
“Always.”
Are both guys getting equal first team reps in practice?
“We have had one practice and I am not exactly sure how the reps were distributed, but they are both getting reps that they need to get to be able to be the guy.”
Having not missed a game ever, did you get a sense of how Joe [Martinek] was dealing with missing the Syracuse game?
“It is killing him. He is a competitor. Ankles can be that way, I feel bad for him. I feel bad for us as well”
How is Joe feeling now?
“He is still not doing real well.”
How is Teddy [Dellaganna] doing health wise and what did you think of the punting effort against Syracuse?
“Teddy is doing better health wise. I thought Kyle [Sullivan] stepped up and did a very good job. He had a big punt laying it down inside the 20. He did some good things. For a guy who quite frankly wasn’t even a punter in high school, to be able to come here and do what he has done. He is an extremely good athlete. He can do a lot of things.”
I know you get tired of us asking you but is there any update on [Mohamed] Sanu and D.C. [Jefferson]?
“I don’t get tired of you asking me. We are not going to know until the end of the week with Sanu. Hopefully he will be able to do some. I don’t think there is any way he will be full go. Is there some things he can do… hopefully if we limit him and don’t fatigue him. D.C. is in pain but he practiced. I think D.C. is going to be in pain the rest of the year, it is just a matter of to what degree and if it gets bad enough does it prohibit him from playing.”
Is there a balance with the Wildcat without altering the rhythm of the quarterbacks?
“I am sure there are many schools of thought. I am not sure what the rhythm is handing off and then watching the play because that is the quarterback does on a run play in a conventional offense. We are not a huddle team so it is not like he is in the huddle ‘let’s go guys.’ He is getting the signal, handing the ball off and then we are on to the next play. So whether he is standing there on the side next to me or he is out there handing it and then watching the running back, I am not sure how much off a difference it makes to tell you the truth.”
With little success running out of a conventional style do you prefer play action?
“I don’t think it is accurate that we can’t run out of the conventional offense. I think we do have runs out of the conventional as well to set up play action and because there is certain looks that we really like out of the conventional.”
Jeremy Deering’s high school coach talked about how tough he is. Did we see how tough he is carrying the ball 29 times and getting out of it pretty well?
“Yeah, I think he is very tough. He is a great competitor. He loves to have the ball in his hands. As he said to me ‘I love this.”
