PISCATAWAY, N.J. (November 4, 2010) – Rutgers volleyball senior outside hitter Caitlin Saxton (Encinitas, Calif.) was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II First Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced today. As a First Team honoree, Saxton is eligible for Academic All-America honors.
“Caitlin exemplifies what a student athlete is supposed to be,” said Rutgers head coach CJ Werneke. “She is certainly very deserving of this honor.”
Saxton has maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average as a journalism and media studies and sociology double-major. Saxton is set to graduate in May 2011 and plans on attending law school the following fall. For her impressive accomplishments in the classroom, Saxton has garnered numerous accolades including being named a CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Third Team Academic All-America in 2009, making her only the sixth BIG EAST volleyball student-athlete to claim Academic All-America honors from CoSIDA in the 20-year history of BIG EAST volleyball.
Saxton has also been honored as a 2009 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine First Team Academic All-District II selection, a two-time Academic All-BIG EAST honoree and has helped Rutgers earn an AVCA Team Academic Award for posting an overall team grade point average of above a 3.30.
Saxton has been equally impressive on the court as she leads the Scarlet Knights in kills (264), kills per set (2.97) and total attacks (799), while ranking in RU’s top-five in service aces (second, 22), digs (second, 225) and blocks (fourth, 27). Saxton also ranks narrowly outside of the top ten in the Rutgers career record book for kills (853) and attempts (2678) despite only having played two and a half years in the program.
To qualify for Academic All-District honors, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.3 cumulative grade point average, at least sophomore academic standing, and must be a starter or significant reserve for his/her team. First, second, and third teams are selected in each region, with the First Team regional picks advancing on to the national ballot.
Saxton and the rest of the Scarlet Knights return to action this weekend when they host Marquette and Syracuse in a pair of BIG EAST contests.
