Cancún, Mexico (Nov. 9, 2010) – Rutgers women’s soccer redshirt freshman Jonelle Filigno (Mississauga, ON, Canada) and the Canadian National Team earned its second CONCACAF women’s title with a 1-0 win over Mexico in the final of the confederation's World Cup qualifying tournament.
Filigno saw action off the bench after assisting on the game-winner and scoring the insurance goal Friday against Costa Rica. Former Scarlet Knight assistant coach Karina LeBlanc got the nod between the pipes, earning her fourth clean sheet of the tournament. Canada finished its six games without conceding a goal and outscored its opponents 17-0.
Canada will shift its focus to the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany. It will be Canada’s fifth-consecutive FIFA Women’s World Cup appearance. The 22 day soccer celebration will be held in nine cities across Germany beginning June 26 and leading to a July 17 final in Frankfurt.
