Rutgers Gymnastics Travels To Ohio For Tri-Meet Friday

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (February 18, 2010) – The Rutgers gymnastics team travels to the state of Ohio for a tri-meet with Kent State and Northern Illinois Friday at 7:00 p.m. inside the M.A.C. Center on the campus of Kent State. The event is titled “Flip for the Cure” as a portion of the proceeds for the meet will be used to raise money for breast cancer awareness.
The Scarlet Knights are coming off a first-place showing in a quad meet against Brockport, Cortland and Ursinus last Saturday. RU posted a team score of 189.400 in the meet. Four Scarlet Knights finished or tied for first place in their respective events. Senior Prishani Seebadri (Wenonah, N.J.) took top honors on the bars with a season-best 9.750. Junior Kiah Banfield (Newbury Park, Calif.) and freshman Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.) tied for first place in the floor exercise with a 9.675. Freshmen Emma-Rose Trentacosti (Ridgefield, N.J.) and Zito and senior Laura Sevarino (Cheshire, Conn.) gave RU a 1-2-3 finish on the balance beam with scores of 9.675, 9.625, and 9.600, respectively. Zito captured the all-around with a 37.825 in the meet.
As a team, Rutgers is averaging a score of 189.364 in the seven meets the Scarlet Knights have competed in this season. That mark is up nearly a full point from the 188.383 RU averaged last season.
Kent State, a member of the Mid-American Conference, is coming off its 15th-straight conference victory with a 194.250-193.925 win over Central Michigan last Saturday. Senior Lydia Barrett took top honors on the vault (9.825) and bars (9.875) and second in the floor exercise (9.850) in the meet. Junior Christina Lenny led the Golden Flashes in the all-around in the meet with a 38.975.
Northern Illinois, also a member of the Mid-American Conference, last competed on Feb. 7 with a score of 192.425 to place second in a quad meet against Texas Women’s University, Air Force and Centenary. Sophomore Tanya Tachan is coming off a career-best 38.775 in the all-around in the meet. Holly Richard also competed in the all-around for the Huskies with a 38.650 in the meet. Sophomore Ashley Guerra took the bars title in the quad meet with a 9.800. She has won the bars event in three of the five meets for Northern Illinois this season with a season-best score of 9.825.
Friday’s meet will be the first ever meeting for the Scarlet Knights against both Kent State and Northern Illinois.
