Box Score 2 CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Feb. 27, 2010) – The Rutgers softball team (1-8) picked up its first win Saturday as the Scarlet Knights took down Austin Peay, 6-1, at the Frost Classic Inspired by Memorial. RU fell earlier in the day to East Tennessee State University, 5-0. Sophomore Mikelyn Messina (Prospect, Conn.) hit a grand slam to give the Scarlet Knights a lead they would not relinquish.
Sophomore Noelle Sisco (Towaco, N.J.) toed the rubber in game two, earning the win over Austin Peay (3-8). Sisco went seven innings allowing just one run on three hits while striking out three.
RU fell behind early on a double by AP’s Tiffany Smith and a single by Catie Cozart. Rutgers knotted the game 1-1 on back-to-back doubles by freshman Ashley Bragg (Middletown, Del.) and sophomore Brittany Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.).
In the fifth inning, freshman Jennifer Harabedian (Flemington, N.J.) walked with one out in the inning. Junior Danielle Procopio (Vineland, N.J.) bunted for a hit and classmate Mickenzie Alden (Spokane, Wash.) hit a hard ball to the pitcher for a single to load the bases. Messina homered to center for four RBI, giving RU its first lead of the day. Brittany Lindley and Mandy Craig (Manassas, Va.) used back-to-back singles to tack on one more run.
In game one, freshman pitcher Abbey Houston (New Egypt, N.J.) got the nod, going five innings against ETSU (7-4). The rookie gave up four runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out one.
Bragg went 2-for-3 on against the Buccaneers. In the fourth inning, the rookie started things off with a single up the middle. Brittany Lindley was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with one out. The Scarlet Knights were unable to capitalize, however, ending the inning on a fielder’s choice and a fly out to leftfield.
In the fifth, Rutgers threatened again as Procopio hit a two-out single up the middle. Alden moved the runner over to third on a single to right and advanced on the throw but RU could not score.
ETSU’s Katy Jett went 2-for-3 with a walk and third baseman Amy Campbell went 1-for-2 with a RBI in the win.
Rutgers plays Wright State Sunday at 10 a.m. in the final day of the Frost Classic Inspired by Memorial.
