Rutgers Softball Heads West For Oklahoma State Mizuno Classic

STILLWATER, Okla. (March 11, 2010) – Rutgers softball travels west for the Oklahoma State Mizuno Classic this Fri.-Sun. March 12-14 in a playoff-style tournament. RU will face Wisconsin, Prairie View A&M and host Oklahoma State on Friday and Saturday. The rest of the tournament is designed as a playoff, with the No. 1 seed taking on the No. 4 seed and the championship or consolation taking place on Sunday.
Left-handed hurler Holly Johnson (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) leads the Scarlet Knights (5-10), as the sophomore earned BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week Monday for her outstanding performance at the USF Under Armour Invitational. Johnson helped Rutgers to three wins over the weekend – winning two and notching one save. The lefty allowed just seven hits over 18.2 innings, striking out 10 batters while giving up just one earned run for a 0.48 ERA.
At the plate, sophomore Brittany Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) paces RU with a .385 batting average. The third baseman has six RBI and four steals on the season. Classmate Mikelyn Messina (Prospect, Conn.) leads the team with three home runs and 12 RBI.
RU faces Wisconsin (4-11) Friday at 11 a.m. Led by head coach Chandelle Schulte, the Badgers are paced by Molly Spence, batting .372 with nine RBI and two home runs. Rutgers leads the all-time series, 1-0, with UW, winning in February of 2003, 5-1, at the Florida Atlantic “Worth” Tournament.
At 1:30 p.m., the Scarlet Knights face Prairie View A&M (0-11) for the first time in program history. PVAMU is led by Kelli Scruggs, batting 6-for-20 with four RBI on the season. At the helm of the Panthers is Lana Williams.
Rutgers matches up with host Oklahoma State (15-5) on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The Cowgirls hold a 2-0 advantage all-time against the Scarlet Knights. The last time the two squads met was in 1991, as OSU tallied a 1-0 victory. Pitcher Anna Whiddon leads Oklahoma State with a 1.84 ERA, an 11-2 record and 73 strikeouts. At the helm of OSU is Rich Wieligman.
