Mar 17 | Softball
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (March 17, 2010) – Rutgers softball faces Missouri State University in a doubleheader Thursday, March 18 at 4 p.m. at the Killian Softball Complex in Springfield, Mo. This will be the first meeting in program history between the two squads
Rutgers (7-14) is coming off a 6-3 loss to Wichita State on Monday. The Scarlet Knights tallied seven hits and took an early 3-0 lead, but it would not be enough to propel RU past WSU. Freshman Ashley Bragg (Middletown, Del) went 2-for-3 on the day, while sophomore Mikelyn Messina (Prospect, Conn.) hit a homer to give Rutgers the early 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Brittany Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) paces the Scarlet Knights with a .321 batting average. The third baseman has started all 21 games, tallying two doubles, a triple and a home run to put together nine RBI. Brittany Lindley is also perfect on the base path, stealing four in 2010.
In the circle, Brittany’s sister and senior ace Nicole Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) leads the team with three wins and 44 strikeouts. She has thrown two complete games and notched the only shutout of the season.
Missouri State (3-12) is coming off a split day with Kansas at the Kansas Invitational. MSU edged KU, 8-7 in game one, before falling 4-3 in the second contest. The Bears registered their best offensive effort of the season in game one, plating five runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Pacing MSU is junior Jenna Schwark with a .319 batting average, getting on base at a .373 clip. Leading the pitching corps is Natalie Rose with a 3.05 ERA in nine appearances. The sophomore has fanned 34 batters this season and is holding opponents to a .262 batting average.
