Rutgers Gymnasts To Compete In EAGL Championship Saturday

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 26, 2010) – The Rutgers gymnastics team heads to Durham, N.H. to compete in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championship, hosted by the University of New Hampshire, Saturday at 2 p.m. inside Lundholm Gymnasium.
Joining the Scarlet Knights as part of the eight-team EAGL Championship is New Hampshire, George Washington, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Pittsburgh and West Virginia. NC State has the highest regional qualifying score in the league with a 194.725, which ranks 28th-best nationally.
Rutgers ranks 55th nationally with a regional qualifying score of 190.500. The Scarlet Knights finished the regular season 10-14 overall. RU faced six of the seven other teams in the EAGL as George Washington wasn’t on the 2010 slate.
The Scarlet Knights are averaging a 189.598 this season, which is more than a point better than last season’s average total score of 188.383.
Seniors Alyssa Lewandwoski (Linden, N.J.), Prishani Seebadri (Wenonah, N.J.) and Laura Sevarino (Cheshire, Conn.) headline the Scarlet Knights. Lewandowski is a regular for RU on the vault and in the floor exercise averaging a team-best 9.627 on the vault and a 9.581 in the floor exercise. Seebadri, who missed the first five meets of the year while rehabbing from off-season knee surgery, is Rutgers’ bars specialist, posting a 9.750 twice this season. Sevarino has been a regular all-around competitor for the Scarlet Knights with an average of 37.575. She is averaging a 9.590 on the vault and a 9.517 in the floor exercise.
Four true freshmen have had a major impact on the program during their first year “On the Banks” in Jayne Jeffreys (Jackson, N.J.), Nicole Romano (Livingston, N.J.), Emma-Rose Trentacosti (Ridgefield Park, N.J.) and Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.). Zito has competed in the all-around in all but one event this season, missing the Scarlet Knights’ last meet at North Carolina. She owns the best all-around score with an average of 37.876, including a 9.664 in the floor exercise. The freshman is expected to return for the EAGL Championships. Romano has competed in every meet this season and has participated in the all-around nine times. Trentacosti has competed on both the bars and balance beam in every meet this season. She is averaging a team-best 9.471 on the balance beam. Jeffreys has seen extensive action on the bars this season.
Junior Kiah Banfield (Newbury Park, Calif.) is Rutgers’ top competitor in the floor exercise with an average score of 9.675. She has averaged a 9.819 in the event over her last four meets.
Rutgers finished eighth in last year’s EAGL Championship, hosted by NC State, with a score of 189.125.
