Rutgers Softball Heads to Princeton Saturday

 PRINCETON, N.J. (March 26, 2010) – Rutgers softball faces in-state rival Princeton in a doubleheader at the Class of 1895 Field Saturday, March 27. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. One of the most storied rivalries in program history, the Scarlet Knights and Tigers will be meeting for the 51^st time in school history, with Princeton holding a 30-20 advantage.

Rutgers (10-15) is coming off a split doubleheader with Stony Brook on Wednesday. Sophomore Holly Johnson (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) pitched a no-hitter in game two, going the full seven innings. Recording her fourth win on the year, the lefty was just an error, a hit batter and walk away from a perfect game. Johnson fanned seven batters in the contest.

Johnson leads RU with a 3.22 ERA and a 4-3 overall record. She has started six games, finishing four, with 27 strikeouts on the year. Senior ace Nicole Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) owns a 4.18 ERA with four wins and a team-best 59 K’s.

At the plate, sophomore Brittany Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) paces the Scarlet Knights with a .333 batting average. Classmate Mikelyn Messina (Prospect, Conn.) has clubbed six of the squad’s nine home runs, including two at Stony Brook. 

Princeton (6-12) is returning from a 13-game spring break trip to California that saw the squad win five games against California-based competition. Senior Jamie Lettire and sophomore Nicole Ontiveros are hitting above .300, with Lettire hitting six home runs to put her at 35 for her career, the second-most in program history.

In the circle, Lettire (0-7, 7.55) has split time with a pair of freshman pitchers, Liza Kuhn (3-2, 4.24) and Alex Peyton (3-3, 3.97).

The Tigers are coached by Trina Salcido in her third season as head coach with Princeton. Salcido guided the Tigers to the NCAA tournament in her first season in 2008.
