Rutgers Softball Meets Long Island University Tuesday

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (March 29, 2010) – On its longest win streak of the season, the Rutgers softball team heads to Brooklyn, N.Y. for a mid-week doubleheader with Long Island University on Tuesday, March 30. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at LIU Field.
Rutgers (12-15) won two games at Princeton Saturday, upending the Tigers, 9-4, in game one, and 4-3 in game two in nine innings. Junior Mandy Craig (Manassas, Va.) drove in the game-winning run in game two with a deep double to center.
The Scarlet Knights boast a 12-5 all-time record against the Blackbirds. RU fell twice last season, 2-0, on March 20 and by a score of 4-2 on April 30.
Sophomore Holly Johnson (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) leads the team with a 3.32 ERA, five wins and one save. Senior ace Nicole Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) has also notched five wins on the season, fanning 61 batters on the season.
At the plate, sophomore Brittany Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) paces the team with a .333 average, adding 15 RBI. Classmate Mikelyn Messina (Prospect, Conn.) leads the team with seven home runs, just one away from tying for second in the RU record book for home runs in a season.
RU has won five of its last six games, outscoring opponents 33-11. Over that span, Messina has hit three home runs for seven RBI and Lindley is boasting a .368 batting average.
Long Island (16-12) is led by junior Bianca Mejia, hitting at a .350 clip with 14 RBI and 17 walks. In the circle, Blaire Porter paces the Blackbirds with 14 wins and a 1.64 ERA. The senior has fanned 77 batters this season.
At the helm of LIU is Roy Kortmann in his 16th season. The Rider graduate boasts a 446-322-2 record with the Blackbirds, winning eight regular season Northeast Conference titles and seven NEC Tournament Championships.
