NOTRE DAME, Ind. (April 1, 2010) – Rutgers softball (12-16, 0-1) fell to No. 24/RV Notre Dame (25-6, 4-0) Thursday, April 1 at the Melissa Cook Stadium by a score of 8-0. Senior Nicole Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) (5-9) earned the nod, going 5.1 innings and tallying the loss.    

Lindley gave up five runs on nine hits, notching two strikeouts. Sophomore Noelle Sisco (Towaco, N.J.) came in for relief, pitching one third of the inning, giving up three hits and a walk. The Irish scored three unearned runs with Sisco in the circle.

Notre Dame struck first with back-to-back singles from Brianna Jorgensborg and Alexa Maldonado in the bottom of the third. Heather Johnson brought the runners home with a two RBI single that dropped in left center field, giving UND a 2-0 lead.

The Scarlet Knights threatened in the sixth, as freshman Kaci Madden (Saratoga, N.Y.) sent a blooper to right center field. Junior Danielle Procopio (Vineland, N.J.) came in as a pinch runner and sophomore Mikelyn Messina (Prospect, Conn.) walked to put runners at first and second. Junior Jen Meinheit (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) slapped the ball between shortstop and third, but Rutgers hit two pop-ups to end the inning.

In the bottom of the inning, Notre Dame’s Christine Lux doubled to deep center field, but Meinheit hit the cutoff and sophomore Brittany Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) nabbed Lux at third. The Irish responded with six runs on six hits and one error, pushing the score to 8-0.

Jody Valdivia toed the rubber for Notre Dame, allowing no runs on two hits in six innings with five strikeouts.

Rutgers will complete the three game series with Notre Dame Saturday, April 3. The doubleheader begins at 11 a.m.
