CHICAGO, Ill. (April 17, 2010) – The Rutgers softball team (15-24, 2-6) fell twice to DePaul at Cacciatore Stadium Saturday, losing the first game 9-0 in five innings and dropping game two, 4-2. Junior Danielle Procopio (Vineland, N.J.) went 1-for-2 with a walk in game two, maintaining a .667 on-base percentage.
Freshman Abbey Houston (New Egypt, N.J.) toed the rubber in game two, going three innings and giving up one run off two hits. SeniorNicole Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) came in for relief, pitching three innings and taking the loss. The righty gave up three runs on four hits, while fanning two.
The Scarlet Knights scored first in the top of the second, as junior Mandy Craig (Manassas, Va.) and freshman Ashley Bragg (Middletown, Del.) walked and Procopio pushed the ball through the right side to load the bases. With two outs and a full count, sophomore Kylee Bishop (Tacoma, Wash.) hit the ball hard to the shortstop, who tried to go to second but couldn’t get Procopio, scoring the first run of the game.
RU kept it going in the third, as junior Jen Meinheit (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) lined a shot over the shortstop’s head for a double to lead off the inning. Sophomore Brittney Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) placed a bunt perfectly up the right field line, reaching first and advancing Meinheit to third. Brittney Lindley then stole second, making first base available and denying the force. Freshman Jen Harabedian (Flemington, N.J.) struck out, but hustled to first and beat the throw, loading the bases. Classmate Kaci Madden (Saratoga, N.Y.) sacrificed herself with a fly to right field, scoring Meinheit and putting RU up, 2-0.
DePaul got on the board in the fourth on a RBI single by Marie Thompson and threatened to get more with runners at first and third. Thompson attempted to steal at second, but Madden gunned her down and Bragg threw right back to Madden at home for the out, completing the double play and saving the 2-1 lead.
The Blue Demons scored three runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 4-2. Marla Matthews hit a double to the gap in right center for two RBI.
Nicole Lindley got the nod in game one, going two innings and facing five batters in the third without recording an out. The righty allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits and one walk, notching the loss.
