PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 23, 2010) – Rutgers softball returns home to face BIG EAST rival Providence in a three-game series Saturday-Sunday, April 24-25 at the RU Softball Complex. Both days will start at noon and the doubleheader on Saturday is a part of the Rutgers Day festivities.
The Scarlet Knights lead the all-time series with the Friars, 23-12, but have not won a contest (seven straight) since March 26, 2006 when RU split the doubleheader with PC. Last season, Rutgers fell by scores of 6-3 and 11-3 in Providence.
RU (16-26, 2-8) used a seventh inning rally to edge Monmouth, 5-3, Thursday at the MU Softball Park. Senior ace Nicole Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) earned the win for the Scarlet Knights, giving up just one hit in two scoreless innings, while striking out three. Nicole Lindley leads Rutgers in the circle with a 3.67 ERA, eight wins and 92 strikeouts.
Sophomore Brittney Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) paces the Scarlet Knights at the plate, maintaining a .319 average and slugging at a .605 clip. The third baseman has tallied nine round-trippers this season, good for second all-time on the RU single season home run list.
Providence (17-22, 6-7) swept Connecticut in a doubleheader at home Wednesday by scores of 3-1 and 6-0. Second baseman Justine Stratton went 3-for-6 on the day with two runs scored and two RBI. The junior leads the Friars with a .347 average and 21 RBI on the season.
Sophomore Alicia Grosso leads the PC pitching corps with a 2.35 ERA and seven wins. The righty has fanned 39 batters and holds opponents to a .272 batting average.
Head coach of Providence in her fifth season is Kerri Jacklets. In four seasons in the Ocean State, Jacklets has led the Friars to two BIG EAST Championship berths.
Fans are advised that Sunday will be the March of Dimes walk at the RAC, starting at 9 a.m.
