Rutgers Softball Upends Providence 4-2 in Rubber Game

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 25, 2010) – Rutgers softball (18-27, 4-9) defeated Providence (18-24, 7-9) 4-2 in the rubber game Sunday, April 25 at the RU Softball Complex for the squad’s first BIG EAST series win of 2010. Sophomore Holly Johnson (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) toed the rubber for RU, notching a career-high 11 strikeouts.
Johnson went the full seven innings, allowing two runs (none earned) on three hits while walking three. Junior Mandy Craig (Manassas, Va.) hit the game-winning two-run home run and finished the day 2-for-3.
The Scarlet Knights got on the board first, as junior Jen Meinheit (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) reached on an error by the second baseman. Sophomore Mikelyn Messina (Prospect, Conn.) sacrificed the centerfielder over with a bunt down the first base line and sophomore Brittney Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) brought her home with a single up the middle, advancing to second on the throw home. Craig advanced Lindley to third on a groundout. After Kylee Bishop (Tacoma, Wash.) was hit by a pitch, a double steal brought Lindley home to put RU up 2-0.
The Friars answered in the top of the third with two runs on one hit and one error, highlighted by a two-run double by Justine Stratton.
Craig blasted the ball to deep center in the bottom of the third inning - a two-run shot that gave RU a lead it would not relinquish. It was the junior’s second of the season. She scored Lindley who reached on a fielder’s choice.
Johnson got RU out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth, forcing Jen Abrams to pop up to Lindley at third.
Messina smacked her first triple of the season to right field in the bottom of the fifth with two outs, but RU could not capitalize.
The Scarlet Knights travel to Georgetown, Wednesday, April 28 for a doubleheader with the Hoyas.
