Rutgers Softball Heads to Georgetown for Wednesday Doubleheader

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 27, 2010) – Coming off its first series win of the season, the Rutgers softball team heads to the nation’s capital for a Wednesday doubleheader against Georgetown April 27 at 3 p.m.
Rutgers (18-27, 4-9) last defeated Providence 4-2 in the rubber game Sunday to take the series win – its first of the season. Sophomore Holly Johnson (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) toed the rubber for RU, notching a career-high 11 strikeouts and allowing just two runs. Junior Mandy Craig (Manassas, Va.) hit the game-winning two-run home run in the bottom of the third and finished the day 2-for-3.
The Scarlet Knights have played just three games against the Hoyas, falling in two. Last season, RU split with GU, winning game one 9-7 and falling in game two, 7-2. Mikelyn Messina (Prospect, Conn.) went 2-for-5 on the day with two runs scored and a walk.
Sophomore Brittney Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) paces RU with a .312 batting average and 28 RBI. The third baseman sits fifth in the BIG EAST in home runs (nine) and second all-time in the RU single season record book. Brittney Lindley also slugs at a .584 clip, good for 10th in the conference.
Senior Nicole Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) leads the pitching corps with a 3.60 ERA, nine wins and 102 strikeouts against just 44 walks. The righty holds opponents to a .259 batting average.
Georgetown (16-26, 5-9) is led by senior Demetria Cipriano with a .356 batting average and 26 RBI. In the circle, sophomore Mackensey Carter paces the Hoyas with a 2.64 ERA and seven wins. The righty has fanned 77 batters in 2010.
Pat Conlan is in her fifth season as the first head coach of GU. Conlan led Georgetown into its first year as a BIG EAST member in 2009, guiding the team to an 8-14 record and an 11th place finish.
