May 01 | Softball
QUEENS, N.Y. (May 1, 2010) – Rutgers softball (20-29, 6-11) split with St. John’s (18-29, 6-12) Saturday, May 1 at Red Storm Field, winning game one in come-from-behind fashion, 5-2, and falling 4-3 in game two on a walk off home run.
Sophomore Brittney Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) hit for the cycle on the day, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three walks and two runs scored. The third baseman hit her 10th home run of 2010, moving just two away from tying Nikki Childress (2004) for the single season record.
Senior Nicole Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) got the nod in game one, going the complete seven innings. The righty allowed two runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Nicole Lindley moves to 10-15 in 2010.
The Red Storm got on the board first, on a lead-off double by Chelsea Durning and a home run to left off the bat of Amber Curry.
Rutgers tied it up in the third, as freshman Kaci Madden (Saratoga, N.Y.) walked and Brittney Lindley doubled to right field, moving Madden to third. Junior Mandy Craig (Manassas, Va.) came through in the clutch, singling to left center for the first run of the game. Brittney Lindley scored on a wild pitch to knot the squads.
Sophomore Lindsey Curran (Monroe Twp., N.J.) blasted her first home run of the season – second of her career – in the fourth to give RU a 3-2 lead. Sophomore Kylee Bishop (Tacoma, Wash.) walked and classmate Mikelyn Messina (Prospect, Conn.) pinch ran for the designated player. Working her way around the bases, Messina scored on a groundout to the shortstop.
Sophomore Holly Johnson (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) toed the rubber in game two, allowing four runs on seven hits, while fanning seven. The lefty falls to 7-8 on the season.
In the first inning, Brittney Lindley hit a sacrifice fly to left to drive in junior Jen Meinheit (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) who walked.
St. John’s tied it up in the bottom of the second on a Kristi Cady homer to left field. RU answered in the top of the third with a homer of its own by Brittney Lindley, her 10th of the season.
Craig’s double up the middle in the fifth scored Curran who had struck out swinging but reached on a passed ball to put the Scarlet Knights up 3-1.
STJ knotted the score in the bottom of the inning on a two-out home run by Curry that scored Durning who had walked.
With a 3-2 count, Curry finished Rutgers with a two-out walk-off round-tripper – her third blast of the day – in the bottom of the seventh.
The Scarlet Knights finish up the three-game series with the Red Storm Sunday, May 2. Game time has been changed to 1 p.m.
